House Democratic Caucus Campaign Chair
Rip Sullivan (VA-48)
Richard “Rip” Sullivan has risen steadily in the ranks of the House of Delegates Democratic Caucus since being elected to the House in 2014. He was entrusted by his colleagues with the Democratic Caucus Campaign Chair position, which means that Rip is leading the Caucus’ efforts to recruit candidates, gain seats, and win back the majority in the House.
In 2017, Democrats have candidates running in all 17 House Districts currently held by Republicans where Hillary Clinton ran ahead of Donald Trump. In fact, in many districts Democrats have multiple candidates. Were the Democrats to re-elect all 34 incumbents and win the 17 districts, it would hold a 51-seat majority in the House.
While that goal is very ambitious, it is a good sign that Democrats will win additional seats in the House. And strong House candidates will also give a boost to the Democratic statewide ticket to be determined on June 13.
Before his election to the House, Rip served our region on numerous boards and commissions, and has extensive experience in a number of key policy areas that have directly translated to his work for his district. His appointments include the Fairfax Consumer Protection Commission, Transportation Advisory Commission, Housing and Redevelopment Authority, and Park Authority. An attorney with a prominent Northern Virginia law firm, Rip is a former member of the Board of Governors of the Virginia Bar Association and has served as President of the Legal Services of Northern Virginia, a non-profit institution providing legal services to low-income residents.
